Coach Carter is a 2005 American sports based drama, directed by Thomas Carter. The film is based upon the true story of Coach Ken Carter who takes the job of coaching the Oilers basketball team at his old high school in a poor area of Richmond, where he was once a champion athlete, achieving unbeaten records.
When Coach Carter begins training the team he is discouraged at the athlete’s attitude, disrespectful behaviour and dismal play.

Imposing strict discipline contracts, Coach Carter sets out to transform the team’s behaviour towards education and sports. Each player has a clear set of rules and boundaries to follow to stipulate respectful behaviour, good school attendance and to maintain respectable grades.

Initially, the team are resistant to conform, nevertheless, this is soon dismissed as the team acknowledge that Coach Carter’s guidance leads to undefeated results in the basketball championships.

However, when the team's behaviour begins to stray and Coach Carter becomes aware that many of the players are demonstrating poor results in their classes he takes action immediately. Much to the teams outrage the community centre is closed until the team shows acceptable academic improvements within their education.
Coach Carter is determined to show the team that they must rely on more than sports to secure a successful future and he eventually finds that he has affected then more deeply than he ever had expected to.

Coach Carter focuses predominately on the struggles and challenges that the players face. This is an excellent movie to illustrate the challenges of mentorship, coaching and leadership not just in sports, but in every organization. (Chisholm, 2013)
