Coach Carter
A Leadership Analysis

Leadership: The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it

(Dwight D. Eisenhower)

Group dynamics

The website was created to present information about leadership styles, group formations and how these related to social work practice.

In order to create the website a team needed to be formed that was able to work collaboratively and effectively to achieve the required outcomes.

Adhering to Belbin’s (2004) team roles theory, we established our individual roles within the group to enable tasks to be distributed to each member building upon their individual strengths and skills.

To identify the processes needed within a team we used Tuckman's (1965) group work theory to support our own group formation. Furthermore we continued to refer to Tuckman's theory throughout the creation of the website to consider the group dynamics at different stages.

When reflecting upon the work it was identified that there was an importance of both regular group meetings and social media communication. Using a Google Drive account promoted the team to share progress and review ideas.

We chose to analyse Coach Carter’s leadership style as when watching the film he was a memorable and interesting leader with strong effective leadership traits. Therefore we were intrigued to develop our knowledge and understanding of this style. In addition his strong value base and determination reflects the key values in social work practice.
